Should Black People celebrate the 4th of july
Quote:
**** the 4th of july. The real black independence day is December 6 when slavery ended.
|
Quote:
Blacks were still slaves on 4th of July... That **** is not for us. Stop celebrating white folks holidays.
|
Quote:
Why African Americans should not celebrate the Fourth of July.
When America gained its Independence Day from Great Britain in 1776, our ancestor slaves were still in bondage under a racist white man's whip.
|
Quote:
Jan 1st 1863 emancipation proclamation that's Black people 4th of
|
Quote:
independence day is NOT for black people. While white americans were celebrating their freedom from Britain we were still in chains and our freedom held hostage. Not to mention the declaration of indepdence states that all men were created equal YET blacks were slaves and seen as 1/3 of a person during the time it was written!
|
Quote:
Blacks were still enslaved in 1776 It makes no sense to support your oppressor's independence from another oppressor. This is "captive bonding" at its best. It wasn't until 1863 (around 87 years later) that the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Even that was followed by another 100 years or so of Jim Crow and struggles for basic civil and human rights. So, what are Blacks really "independent" from when there is an active effort to assimilate into a society that continues to resist them if they do not support the status quo?
|
Quote:
Yeah, thanks but no thanks.. As previously stated from others, I am a descendant of enslaved people. The Declaration of Independence was not written for my ancestors, therefore I will not rejoice nor will I celebrate. Me celebrating 4th of July is like a Native American celebrating Thanksgiving. For me, it is just another day. .
|
Quote:
The 4th of July celebrate the liberation of wealthy colonial slave owners from their bondage from British taxation without representations. It did absolute NOTHING for the AFRICAN SLAVES here in America. This country can not brings it self to apologize for the continue impact of slavery show how little this country has grown.
|
Quote:
Independence while holding slaves? A contradiction and hypocrisy! How can a nation claim freedom from the British while holding millions of slaves, without whom, that nation would not have had the economic advantage it had. When you add the fact that black people in this country were denied full civil rights until the 1960’s, I find hard to justify a celebration around the concept of independence. How could blacks feel good about celebrating a day of independence when they did not have full civil rights? How then, can I feel good about celebrating July 4th a day that was not inclusive of ALL Americans being entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

I personally know a few woke black people that don't celebrate the fourth of july for the same reasons as the quote in the OP and frankly I agree with them and never thought about it in that light

I don't care about the holiday itself since it really shouldn't exist in the first place and the holiday itself is kind of a slap in the face to my ancestors, but I'm always down for food and fireworks.

Hmm..this is interesting way of looking at it.
I still chose to celebrate because we are every bit part of this nation as well. No matter how it came to be, we have and always will be Americans. We still are treated differently, we still were shipped here, but this is more of our home than anything else.
This country has a disgusting history but we are responsible for the way it is changing

I don't think any of my ancestors were American/in America on July 4 1776, but I still celebrate it. I guess I just don't look for deeper meanings in holidays. I celebrate Christmas too even though I'm not a Christian, I just think it's fun. But I could understand why black people wouldn't wanna celebrate it though I think it's a bit extra to make a huge deal out of it.

Nobody including black people actually "celebrates" the 4th of July itself to begin with these days though. People on 4th of July are worried about BBQs, fireworks and days off from work, not the actual meaning behind it which is the independence of America. Who do you know taking the time to acknowledge that on 4th of July?
This applies with most Holidays now. Who is actually thinking about Jesus Christ on Christmas? Most people want presents then dip. Same with Thanksgiving just being about eating food. Holidays are basically just federal things at this point, all the meaning is gone.

This is true too. My bf is full blood Native American and his family still celebrates Thanksgiving. They just see it as an excuse to be off of work, be with family, eat, watch football, etc. They could give a **** about the actual holiday.

Yes, they should if they want to. We don't need any more segregation which will only cause more racism and hate.

And if everyone is refusing to acknowledge what the 4th of July is about, then they're not actually celebrating it, therefore almost all black people don't celebrate 4th of July to begin with. They use it as an excuse to throw a BBQ Party, which is actually breaking down the historical meaning 4th of July originally had that was unfair to blacks (celebrating the freedom of America), and giving the holiday a new meaning (a day to reunite with family and friends). So by throwing BBQs and celebrating it in that way, you could argue black people are doing the right thing and rewriting the Holiday to something that isn't offensive to them.

I get what your trying to say but imo they're celebrating it's true meaning if their dressed in red, white and blue and have American flag items while shooting fire works. Also I know some atheist that just used Christmas to exchange gift and don't acknowledge any other aspect of that holiday ( i.e going to church, playing Christmas music, having a tree). When I was middle school this one girl had to leave the classroom because she wasn't allowed to listen to Christmas music like frosty the snow man.
