Gaon IS a joke when it comes to using it to prove that idol culture/pop is dominant in Korea. The average Korean doesn't care/know about groups not named SNSD/EXO/Big Bang/2NE1/Wonder Girls etc. Let's look at what the best selling songs of 2016 so far are

Davichi, Gummy, T, MC the Max, K.Will, 10cm, Lee Juck. The average K-pop fan is not actively seeking these songs out or even knows they exist, they certainly wouldn't know that they're the best selling songs of 2016 instead of the more idol-like stuff.
We could even stretch it out and say that Taeyeon, Crush, Zico, Suzy, Eunji, Lee Hi, and Chen's songs aren't idol stuff either, it's not what international fans check for (To be fair, i-fans might like these songs, but I'm betting very few would continue to stick around if MOST K-pop songs sounded like Rain or Dream.). The Korean GP doesn't use idol tracks, for the most part. Twice, Gfriend and Mamamoo are some of the exceptions.
