I wouldn't say the first is gloomy, it's just more urgent. It takes the threat of world domination seriously (somewhat), while 2 makes it all fun and games.
3 is a bit of both.
It's humorous, but the threat to Earth is real and the world is almost destroyed until one of the characters commits Suicide.
Its kinda dark for a kids game
(in some versions they add a picture in the credits to make it seem he survived to lower the rating, but he didn't in the original).
