Overview
Spotify activity marginally increased in July, despite the lack of major releases during the month (only two new releases spawned top 50 Spotify hits; ScHoolboy Q's Blank Face LP and Gucci Mane's Everybody Looking) and it traditionally featuring lower levels of music consumption than most others. Streams of the most popular songs decreased for the second consecutive month, although this month's decreases were slightly smaller in magnitude than June's. Taken out of context, these decreases may seem somewhat alarming. Since May, for example, the average total plays of the top 10 has fallen by 17.7%, and the number of days where the top 10 accumulates 10M+ plays has plummeted from 25 in May to just 1 in July. However, the sum of the total plays of the top 200 increased by 2.1% last month, and the average number of songs reaching 200K plays every day eclipsed 100 for the first time. Additionally, July logged 3 days when the top 200 recorded less than 50M plays, unchanged from June. July did not feature any days where the #200 song had less than 100K plays, and the last day when this occurred was May 16. This trend of decreases at the top contrasting with increases overall is unsustainable, but it is nevertheless fascinating to observe.
The weekly trends we've been seeing the whole year have not abated. Saturday charts continue to feature significantly more activity than any other weekday, while Monday charts continue to feature significantly less. It is worth noting that Sunday updates have been roughly as active as Thursday updates, with Wednesday and Tuesday updates slightly less active than those. Spotify's playlists (both in-house playlists and those curated by record labels) continue to grow in popularity and influence; Today's Top Hits, the most popular of them all, is approaching 10 million followers, and that number does not take into consideration users that discover music via the playlist but do not elect to follow it. Looking forward to later this month, watch for the Spotify performance of Florida Georgia Line's upcoming Dig Your Roots. They are the first major country act to release an album following the streaming service's explosive growth this spring, and the lead single, H.O.L.Y., has far outperformed every other recent country single on on-demand streaming services. It will be intriguing to see whether the album can bring an influx of country listeners to Spotify, or whether H.O.L.Y.'s relative success is simply an anomaly.
