Demi/Selena/Nick/DNCE & The Rise of the Mid-Level Popstar
Washington Post: Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Nick Jonas, DNCE and the rise of the mid-level pop star
Quote:
Demi Lovato began her training in the dark arts of children’s entertainment at a tender age — first as a disciple of the dinosaur, and later the mouse. At 7, she was singing on “Barney & Friends.” At 15, she was starring in the Disney Channel musical “Camp Rock.” Now, at 23, Lovato is a grown-up pop assassin whose stardom isn’t quite super. Instead, she’s a mysterious new master of the middle.
Unlike Disney graduates of yore (Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera), Lovato and her ilk appear to be building their empires at a slightly different stratum of fame. You can hear Lovato all over the radio right now, along with her “Camp Rock” co-stars, Joe and Nick Jonas, and fellow former Barney-friend Selena Gomez. All four are true middle-masters of pop music — and while they don’t always crack the top 10, it’s not because their songs aren’t good enough. It’s because they’re a very precise kind of good enough.
It apparently comes more naturally to singers who began actively preparing for fame upon gaining sentience. These former kid stars don’t always get to rise to the very top of the pops, but that means they’ll never have to fall from the summit, either. Instead of burning superstar-bright, their careers might burn longer. And for showbiz kids who have been trained to nourish themselves with the roar of the crowd (and who are frequently dropped on their faces in the process), cultivating one’s stardom in this aesthetic DMZ promises a sort of longevity.
Kind of misleading since Selena has had so many radio #1s, Hot 100 top 10s, #1 albums, solo arena tours, and more in the past few years while the others are clearly quite a bit below her. I can see how new megastars likely won't appear nearly as often anymore, though.
How is Selena mid-level when she's outlasting and charting higher than all three?
The OP just added her name to the title for extra views, the real article does not have her name in the title and mainly discusses Demi/Nick/DNCE's mid-level success.

She's clearly above them, but I don't think that means she isn't a 'mid-level popstar'.
She's just a bit higher on that hierarchy than the others.

Are you saying that she's on the same level as Rihanna, Beyoncé & Katy then?

She will always be a mid-level artist if after many top 10 (and some top 5 hits) in the US, some pop radio #1s and a couple of #1 albums she struggles to sell +100k first week, to sell 400k albums in the US, 1m WW and struggles to sell her arena tours.
Yes, she's probably the biggest out of the bunch right now, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
And before her stans try to come for me, I repeat, she's the biggest out of her peers named in the title right now.

All of her albums but Revival have sold 400k in the US, she isn't struggling most of her tour is sold out lol. People just don't buy album anymore, Revival is elegible for platinum with streaming and those are the new rules.

1. All of Demi's albums have sold 500k but Confident.
2. Most of Demi's tour is sold out.
3. Confident is eligible for platinum with streaming.
If Demi's a mid-level artist with those stats, then so is Selena.

I have never seen so many lies in a single post lol Do you really think by lying to yourself she is going to be bigger?
1. DEMI didn't sold 500k it stopped at 460 or something like that, it was certified due shipments.
2. She's touring with Nick, not alone and her arenas aren't as big as Selena's, not to mention they''re giving away tickets and doing 2x1 offers and all that. The tickets are also cheaper.
3. Confident is NOT eligible for platinum, it didn't even sold 200K in the US and she only has 2 songs over 100M lol
and yeah Selena still applies as mid level. she's doing slightly better than the others but she hasn't blown up in the way Gaga/Katy/etc have. I would also argue that Ariana seems to have fallen back into this level after originally exploding back in 2014. not that it's a bad thing. like the article says, most of these people will probably have better career longevity since they're not so overexposed.

Confident has sold +212k.
Everyone knows why they are touring together sis (have you heard about they management + record label together? ), Demi already did 2 tour arenas with last album, she can tour arenas alone if she wanted.
They are giving away a few tickets and most of them in contests, not hundred of tickets. Everyone does it.

1. It was at 463,000 17 months ago. Obviously it's sold 500k by now.
2. Her last tour, without Nick, actually sold better than this tour, so Nick is irrelevant to the equation.
2.5. The free tickets thing was supported by a radio station her manager, Philly Mack, works with in a partnership with ClearChannel. The tickets were set aside before they were even put on sale.
3. Yes, it is.
3.5.Yes, It has sold over 200k in the US.
3.99.
From the dates that have a reported boxscore, Demi's concerts are 91% sold out.
From the dates that have a reported boxscore, Selena's are 87.35% sold out.
3.999. 100M what? Her official YouTube channels have 3,000,000,000 views.

1. I know everyone knows they're touring tegether, but you can't say she's selling all those tickets alone, yes she did but the prices weren't as higher as Selena's.
2. It's a promotion on ticketmaster, buy 2 tickets or 3 (I don't remember) and get one free.

Don't forget that they also all stalled at 500k as well. Anyways the Washington post can delete Selena as she is capable of cracking the top 10 with ease as 5 out of her last 7 singles have all cracked it.

Demi's average ticket price is $66.8986554931.
Selena's average ticket price is $67.9908086499.
It's a $1 difference.
So according to you, Demi's giving away tonnes of tickets, and she's making as much as Selena.
Honestly, I think the last HUGE stars to come from Disney will be Hilary Duff and Miley Cyrus tbh. Selling out an entire arena tour with no ticket discounts was super easy for them, and debuting #1 with over 200K was also easy for them.
So I'd definitely agree, Demil, Selena, and especially Nick are mid level popstars, kinda trendy as well however I think Selena would last longer for some reason.
