Meat linked with increased CVD and death (again)
JAMA International Medicine: Association of Animal and Plant Protein Intake With All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality
August 2016

Are you ready to take it easy with the burgers? A new protein-focused paper confirms that eating red meat may be linked to a higher risk of death.
However, replacing animal protein in your diet with plant protein is associated with a decreased risk of death, according to the research, which was published in JAMA Internal Medicine on Monday.
Scientists have long connected processed red meats with a wide spectrum of chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
Now, the new paper reveals that these associations may still exist when examining animal protein intake overall [all animal products], said Dr. Mingyang Song, a researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, who served as lead author of the paper.
Song and his colleagues analyzed data on how much protein 131,342 adults across the country consumed in their daily diets. The data, which came from the 32-year national Nurses' Health Study and the 26-year Health Professionals Follow-up Study at Harvard, assessed protein intake with frequent questionnaires that participants completed.
Specifically, a 10% increase in animal protein intake was linked to a 2% increase in overall mortality and 8% increase in risk of cardiovascular-related death, Song said. However, a 3% increase in plant protein intake was linked to a 10% decrease in overall mortality and a 12% decrease in cardiovascular mortality.
"High animal protein intake has been linked to higher levels of insulin-like growth factor 1, a protein that has been linked to worse health outcomes, whereas high plant protein intake has been associated with lower blood pressure ... and improved insulin sensitivity," Song said.

This isn't the best news for meat eaters, but for anyone considering a vegan diet, it's great! Please note that this content is not intended to belittle anybody or make other people out to look better than others - and likewise - I ask that the same occurs in the comments.
For those interested in further discussion, or have questions or concerns about pursuing a vegan lifestyle, PM me! It's all love here - love for animals, the environment, the planet's resources and of course, your health

Eat healthy, with meat if you like, and be physically active!

I really want to live a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle but taking the first step in a household with people who eat meat makes it hard.
This is good information to know though.

This is fantastic! You absolutely shouldn't feel like you have to tackle it all in one day - as the study points out, the smallest replacements of animal protein with plant protein will create a benefit. Beyond even thinking about entirely meatless or animal-product-less meals, a great place to start is even having half the steak you might usually have and replacing it on the plate with an abundance of something else.

Good thing I don't do any of those then! Looks like the association doesn't stand true for my lifestyle and the consequences of eating meat poses no significant risk to my health. We all win!

So basically, eating meat only negatively affects those who are already destroying their bodies somehow?

This study concluded that, yes - defining these as lifestyle factors based on "smoking, heavy alcohol intake, overweight or obesity, and physical inactivity." The percentage of smokers in the world is believed to be around 20.6%, 8% of men and 3% of women in the US are heavy drinkers, 60% of US adults are physically inactive and over 2.1 billion people worldwide are overweight or obese. So the study effectively concludes that a considerable risk is associated with consuming animal protein for a large percentage of the population anyway, and that this could be greatly ameliorated by consumption of plant protein instead. Beyond that, countless other studies have found a correlation between consumption of animal products and adverse health effects.
