Celeb News: Keke Palmer accused of gay culture appropriation

For several months, the Scream Queens star, 22, has been popularizing the phrase, “the gag,” in both her social media posts and during promotional interviews.

“‘The gag’ is the catch, it’s the coup,” she said during the Late Night With Seth Meyers sit-down, which was reported on by Vulture. “It’s the one thing.”

That one thing, however, may not be as original as Palmer is trying to make it seem. On Saturday, Complex writer Michael Arceneaux pointed out via Twitter that “the gag” is something that gay Black men have been saying for years.

“So, is Keke Palmer going to be using ‘the gag’ for everything now,” he asked. “Also, can gay Black men have anything [that’s solely theirs]?”

Although she wasn’t tagged in the post, Palmer ultimately came across Arceaneaux’s statement, and responded to the journalist.

“The gag is, you just limited yourself to a phrase,” she stated. “I’m not a [gay] Black man, but I know they have much more [to offer] than that.”

In defense of Arceneaux, he has some points. The term, “the gag,” is a well-known increment of Black gay slang with several different tenses (“gagged,” “gagging”) and meanings attached.

Who is "he"? Seth Meyers said this.

This article seems sensationalised. I was literally just on Keke's instagram page when she was using "the gag" in her videos, all I saw was compliments on her outfit and humour. I bet it was just one hater and they are trying to make it into a thing.
