Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics
INFO AND STATISTICS
The 2016 Summer Olympics will be the 28th Summer Olympics that is scheduled to take place in Brazil from 5 August to 21 August 2016. It will be the first time that Brazil has hosted the event. Brazil was elected unchallenged as host nation on 2 October 2009 after The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decreed that the event would be staged in South America for the first time.
Altogether, more than 10,500 athletes from 207 nations, including first time entrants Kosovo and South Sudan, will be participating in the 2016 Summer Olympics. With 306 sets of medals, the games will feature 28 Olympic sports — including rugby sevens and golf, which were added by the International Olympic Committee in 2009. All games will take place in 32 venues in Rio de Janeiro, plus five football co-host cities: Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Manaus, Salvador and Săo Paulo.
These will be the first Summer Olympic Games under the IOC presidency of Thomas Bach. Rio will become the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics. These will be the first games to be held in a Portuguese-speaking country, the first to be held in the host country's winter season, the first since 1968 to be held in Latin America, and the first since 2000 to be held in the Southern Hemisphere.
