Rio should have won, and it did.
Spain last had it in 1992, which is pretty soon, so no. We also had the Olympics four years ago in Europe. Too soon again.
US last had it in 1996, which, again, is only 20 years ago - very soon again for an Olympics. Having the UK host in 2012 and the UK's best buds America in 2016 screams Western dominance as well. So no.
Tokyo probably deserved it, but given Bejing was only eight years ago... you can see they'd prefer not to go back to Asia again and waited until 2020 to give it them.
Rio was the right choice at the time. It was absolutely was. Their economy at the time was very strong and growing and the people of Brazil were very excited to have both the Olympics and the World Cup within two years. Sadly, it hasn't turned out the way it should have and all the problems of given a developing country the massive challenge of hosting an Olympics have been illustrated.
2024 will be very interesting though!
The US will feel they're overdue one and LA have submitted.
Paris has been constantly missing out and so famously nearly got 2012. They're determined to get it. It'll also be 12 years since the Olympics has been in Europe.
Budapest has submitted. But they have no chance up against the other major cities and the IOC will NOT be awarding it to a city that does not have the infrastructure over the Rio mess so far.
Rome have also submitted. Italy hasn't hosted any tournament in ages - NOT EVEN EUROVISION.
So it'll be Rome v Paris v LA. That is pretty intense. I'd say that Paris will *finally* get it.

Paris will probably get 2024. LA 2028. And then 2032 and 2036 will go to Australia and South-Africa or the opposite, in whatever they see as the best order.
