For those of you who stay updated on international news, Duterte is the newly elected president of the Philippines. He has been praised for a lot of his ideas, but his insistence on allowing the police and vigilantes to kill alleged drug dealers/users has created controversy. What do you guys think about that?

-Every Filipino online I have seen (no exceptions) seems to support Duterte so clearly he must be doing something right. However killing people without due process or trial doesn't sound quite right to me.
-Western media might be biased, but still, he's quite clear on what he says. He's encouraging people to kill drug dealers--how are we verifying the people killed are drug dealers? And is it ethical to kill people without a trial?

Its less than 500 I believe. I wish youre here in the Philippines so you can judge and assess the situation in a "real point of view"

There are between 3 million-10M drug dependents/dealers in our country. Asking a third world country to do what a first world country would "rightfully" do is hypocritical. We do not have enough rehabilitative facilities and financial budget to treat these people according to their drug dependency and drug involvement while corruption still persists in our government draining the potential tax income which basically adds to our deficits.

It's honestly not bad. 100 thousands have already surrendered while fear of death keeps the evil at bay. It's a win-win situation and the cops are still obliged to act based on the rules of engagement.

That's what everyone says, and that really says nothing. I don't mean to antagonize anyone btw--I just disagree with the killings. I am glad due process will be implemented now though.

Seriously tho, it's a damn mess here.
Last night, on the news Vigilantes summary executed 3 people. Police said they were not on their drugs watchlist.
I guess this is the "change" that Filipinos want.

Of course. Once proven they killed these people because they're covering themselves up.

I mean no offense but it's just hypocritical to think otherwise when you ain't even here.

When 75 percent of the most heinous crimes are drug related while 65 percent of inmates in prisons are either accused, or convicted, of drug-related crimes...You do not have the moral high ground to judge us when the consequences of drug abuse in our country are a menace as well.

DRUG ADDICTION is all but a matter of control. Control is only for the rich, famous and powerful. Philippines doesn't fit those descriptions(famous maybe). WHEN you don't have the means to control it doesn't mean you're free to do what you want. UNCONTROLLED Drug Use kills. In our case, it kills the user, their families, their friends and neighbors, their children, their loved ones, some unlucky strangers of all gender and ages, the government, our economy and the communities within.

If you can't offer a solution for those problems then you are free to think of one.

I don't think this is a matter of third world vs developing countries. Yes drug use and trafficking is bad but killing people without due process is just as bad because innocent lives are at risk. Even if it's for the greater good.

It sucks. I can't believe they are doing those killings and getting away with it Many of them can actually be innocent but these Cops/Vigilantes can kill them for any other reasons.

The vigilantes are cops themselves who have been involved in drugs. I knew someone who have been caught and was in jail. However, after he was bailed out of jail by his relatives, he was found dead after two days.

And i saw from the news about this honor student who has been a victim of summary executions. A lot of her friends are now crying out to social media since she was never been involved in drugs but her body was found with tags of drug user, etc.

Duterte's policy on drugs actually feels okay until it happens to someone you knew. It could be really scary. These police officers knew who to target since they are the ones who wererunning the operations in the past. I heard that most of these police officers have already surrendered and gave the names of those who were involved. Poor filipinos will suffer.

However, despite these policy controversies, the Duterte administration seems to be more than effective than the past presidents. At least he's doing something worthy.

Idunno but we should not blame Duterte but those people like the police who took these chances to kill their assets just to cover themselves and so they won't get caught.

I agree with the killing of both being wrong yet can see why some may think drug dealers need to be stopped, but people really support the murdering of people just cause of their addictions? That's so ugly.

drug bosses aka policemen or influential people involved with drugs are the ones killing these drug pushers and drug users.

Don't take Duterte's words at face value. He loves to prop up polarizing statements but he actually doesn't mean them literally. His statements are always preposterous but most of what he says in the media are not the actual policies. There is no official order to the police to kill suspected drug dealers. The police are still bound to operate within the bounds of law and they have been going neighborhood-to-neighborhood asking drug addicts to come out and surrender themselves to rehab, sometimes even serenading them. It's actually surprising that it isn't as bad as I imagined it to be. There have been more than a hundred thousand drug users and drug pushers that have already surrendered and it's always on the nightly news. The only ones that were killed by the police according to them were resisting arrest or those who have been warned to stop peddling drugs but didn't. And according to some sources, the ones that were killed by "vigilantes" were actually killed by hitmen on orders of druglords.
