The attackers held five hostages, including the area’s priest, after entering the church in the small Haute-Normandie town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, close to Rouen, during mass at around 10 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET). Hours after the attack, ISIS-affiliated Amaq news agency said “two soldiers of ISIS” carried out the attack. Sister Danielle, a nun who was in the church at the time of the attack, said Hamel was forced to the ground before his throat was slit, the AP reported, citing BFMTV, a national French television news station.

This is the dramatic moment French police rescued a nun before gunning down two murdering ISIS jihadis outside a church in Normandy.
Footage shows a heavily armed elite unit moving in on the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray and pointing guns towards the entrance after the terrorists emerged behind their victims.
After a frantic exchange of shouting, a nun can be seen running to safety before police open fire killing extremists Adel Kermiche and Abdel Malik.
Moments earlier the men had slaughtered 85-year-old priest Jacques Hamel and repeatedly knifed another pensioner.
ISIS has released a picture purporting the show the two terrorists who slaughtered a French priest at the altar as he led mass.
Abdel Malik, along with Adel Kermiche cut the throat of Father Jacques Hammel at a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray in Normandy yesterday.
The pair forced a man in the congregation to video the brutal killing of the 85-year-old on a phone before he was knifed in the neck, arms and back next to the altar.

The extremists then used nuns as human shields as they tried to escape but they were shot dead by police marksmen as they emerged from the building shouting 'Allahu Akbar'.
Now the Amaq news agency, linked to ISIS has released a picture and a video which they say shows Malik and Kermiche, who carried out the killings.
