Like Tori Kelly said, the US has been her biggest struggle market this era. She needs a big hit in the States, and Everyday is perfect for the current urban trend.
Y'all act like you don't stan for a girl whose first hit was an RnB throwback.

No ones here for urban Ariana

The way is still poppier than Everyday and that was in 2013, her sounds completely different.
And the US is hardly her toughest market, she can always promote here. But she can't promote in Australia and UK etc she needs a song that they'll get into without promo.
And her urban singles have trash videos, focus gave us a visual masterpiece that brought her streaming power back.
