For former Queer Nation DJ Jeffrey Hinton, they form a problematic constellation: "So-called social apps like Grindr and our modern obsession with wealth reflect a language of surface, greed, and image," he says. "Thus, [the scene today] is empty and lonely––more so when you factor in chemicals people are using to destroy their souls and brains.

"But," he adds, "it's created a landscape that, hopefully, people will want to change."

Nightlife is a product that supplies two demands—sex and music—and the way gay men seek both have seen a historic shift with the rise of the internet. Or, as Clayton Littlewood, author of the seminal 2008 gay book and play Dirty White Boy, puts it: "Why go out when you can order in?"

"Life's changed a lot since the 90s," says Simon, a 27-year-old media planner, by way of explaining the generational shift. "People are more health-conscious. And there's a lot more at stake with their careers. They're climbing the ladder, and places like NYC and London are too expensive. Everyone's chasing money––no one can afford to spend four days off their face anymore."

"A lot of my friends are straight, so I go to the same places that they do," adds Brad, 25, an HR director. "Also, many gay clubs are quite tacky. The music's not great and the people who are there tend to be off their faces and messy. So why would I go? If I want sex, I can just go on Grindr."

dk how gentrification plays a part , if anything it probably aides the development and sustainability of gay clubs tbh

I mean, maybe bougie white clubs, but gentrification kind of kills the hole-in-the-wall etc. queer poc clubs because it drives out all of their patrons and makes it difficult to leave near, drives out the clubs themselves, etc.

I do agree that gay nightlife is dying but I don't think it has to do with Grindr tbh.

I think it's more to do with the fact that gays (especially younger gays) are starting to feel more comfortable going to straight nightclubs and don't feel unsafe being who they are in front of straight people as much anymore. That is what happened in my country anyway.

EDIT: Then again that kinda make Grindr more useful because where else are you going to meet more gays if you only go to gayclubs.

I hate crowds, am not a fan of the gay scene, am an introvert, and can dance even less than Taylor Swift, so I couldn't give less of a **** actually. Technology is the future, tbh

Clubs are still fun - and it feels cuter to meet someone there than over an app.

ya i can see it

where i live in Texas , the mix of gentrification / dingy hole-in-the-wall type spots tho is pretty mixed , tho i kinda guess that's almost intrinsic to the gentrification process is to retain some of the shabby charm of the previous established businesses

i live in a pretty gay city (Austin, TX) but we really don't have many gay clubs

but the best one is a v grungy and dirty old club that plays the. BEST. music. that's why i go tbh i could give a **** about the other queers honestly. they play Into You and it's not some tragic remix and they play it in full and i go and get my life every other Tuesday

Its a thing here in NYC. People in NYC sometimes go out but they don't actually speak to people they don't already know.

Gentrification of gray neighborhoods has actually made it harder to meet other gay people than Grinder and apps honestly because most people you meet via apps you aren't attracted to in person....or you won't meet them for months.

Straight people move into gay neighborhoods and safe spaces and then its no longer a safe space for gay people to meet with each other. Chelsea NYC now is nothing like it was even 3 years ago. It felt safer in general when it was still a gay neighborhood tbqh...

That's sad if true.

I always have good experiences at gay clubs. The dance floor is always packed and the the gogo dancers are sexy. I love a good drag show too.
