There hasn't been a big album or single of the genre since I don't know when and with Maxwell and Alicia Keys getting such poor reception commercially it feels that way

It isn't dead. Just buried on the adult urban formats. It just isn't mainstream like it was 10+ years ago (sans a few outliers in the last few years, like Diamonds ).

I think R&B has been more commercially successful these last 1-2 years than the previous years. It just has a different sound now, and the older acts are no longer the biggest names.

No. It will never die. We still have a lot of r&b artists with amazing albums. It's just not as mainstream.

Urban is such a big genre; and R&B is just one of the sub-genres in it.
And I don't see any R&B songs and albums doing that well

RnB will be back in a few years just like any major timeless genre

No because we still have RnB artists making RnB music, it's just not mainstream and has become niche. Who knows though, maybe one day we'll get a renaissance.

I'll say that a lot of modern pop artists have been clearly inspired by RnB (Bey, Ariana, Ed Sheeran, Sam smith, Adele, Bryson Teller, etc) so the influence is still huge.

just because pure R&B doesn't experience the same stratospheric heights it had in the 90s doesn't mean that the chart topping pop songs of today are free of its influence ..... i could write y'all a dissertation on how Brandy alone is repsonaible for damn near half of yalls fave's but lemme just chill and give this a resounding HELL NO , R&B is alive and well , especially if u know who to go to / where to look for it
