Dozens dead after suicide bombers strike protest in Afghanistan
At least 80 people were killed and 260 were wounded on Saturday in a suicide attack on a demonstration in Kabul
claimed by Islamic State, an official from the Public Health Ministry said. The deaths are rising to more than double earlier estimates.
Mohammad Ismail Kawousi, a spokesman for the ministry of public health, said the dead and wounded had been taken to hospitals.
Much of the city center had been sealed off with stacks of shipping containers and other obstacles as the march began earlier on Saturday, and security was tight with helicopters patrolling overhead. The attack comes some three weeks after a suicide bomber killed dozens of people in an attack on newly graduated police cadets that was claimed by the Taliban terrorist group.
