In a landscape of incredible television shows, Oz seems to be the HBO series that pop culture history forgot.
It was the first one-hour television show launched by the channel and is ultimately the show that started the trend for cinematic television shows broadcast in long form on American cable television.
At the time of its arrival, Oz was the most violent and sexually aggressive show being broadcast and would still give Game of Thrones a run for its money. The show depicts the struggle of individuals to maintain power, maintain sanity, or simply maintaining the ability to live in the face of gangs that are pretty peachy about hacking people apart and brutally torturing them. It is very entertaining. And much like Game of Thrones, it has the cruel tendency to allow you to get attached to characters before killing them off in one horrific way or another. Looking up the cast list, you get about ten characters out of fifty that actually stick around for all six seasons.
