In an ideal world, the Schengen zone is a great idea giving people fast and easy access through countries when travelling by road. But with the current heightened security risk in Europe some argue that is gives dangerous people the ability to freely move themselves and weapons across the continent undetected. For example, the Paris attackers were able to move weapons into France undetected and some of the attackers who were known to authorities were able to enter France from Belgium freely.

There are different views on the future of Schengen. What are ATRL's views?

Yes, not here for hour-long queues like the ones I had to do in Russia and Turkey or like the ones the Russian tourists have to do when they come here.

no but they should divide it into regions based on how developed/rich the countries are. so scandinavia, benelux + germany, balkan, eastern europe, iberian peninsula etc. could all be regions. that way europeans can visit neighbor countries but not go from south to north, east to west without going through some border control

I doubt this is the problem. Controls can be increased but we have seen that usually terrorists come directly from the place they attack.. it happened at Nice. It's happened now in Germany.

More controls are always welcomed, but the solving is not to abolish Schengen. It wouldn't prevent attacks to happen.

my post wasn't about terrorism, hence why i wanted the regions based on wealth. i see a lot of eastern european immigrants working illegal here because it's cheaper. also human trafficking.

Anyway, the EU as of now is based on economical free movement and people free movement. Illegal work should be persecuted by the land government. It has little to do with Schengen, honestly. Schengen can make it easier for people to move into another country. But illegal contracts would still be there, even if there was no migrants. They are just the ones more willing to submit them, because they are usually in need for money.

Abolishing Schengen won't make illegal work disappear. Like at all.

No!! European integration myst continue on all fronts. A step back is not going to happen and should not happen. Abolishing Schengen would lead to less economic growth and less tourism. I like being able to go to Belgium and Germany without my privacy being invaded with bureaucratic border checks thank you.

This is really dangerous. It's so obvious that ISIS wants far-right movements to increase their power in the continent. They want us less united, in order to re-create similar pre-WW2 conditions in Euope, with xenophobic movements on the rise.

Closure might be the death of us, honestly. Both economically and diplomatically. It's just what they want. And they already had a victory when Brexit happened.

Something needs to be done against terrorism... control needs to be implemented.

I am fine with border controls, if they think so. But I am not fine with getting a VISA in order to visit France. I am an European citizen. I have been an European citizen during my whole life and I'd like to stay so. And I'd like my children to be the same.
