I can, and do it if it seems like it matters to the other person...I don't understand the weird obsession with it though, it's so pointless and clearly gives many people trouble
It took me a while to get used to it but I trained myself to always make eye contact. Before I would always drift away because it made me uncomfortable. I couldn't even stare at family members directly.
I used to find it really difficult to look people in the eyes, like literal fear but it's gotten better as I've gained more confidence. I hate it when people judge you for not looking them in their eyes... It's not like we're trying to be rude, it's just that it's literally uncomfortable and increases anxiety.
Brief and direct eye contact periodically through a conversation is important. Eye contact shows confidence and understanding, i always perceive people as weak or insecure when they dont make eye contact.
Eye contact is so important. Most of the time, if I don't look you in the eye, it's because I'm nervous, think you're ugly, or really really hot. But usually if you look into someone's eyes long enough they become attracted to you.
