This should've been the OP.
1. Spongebob is gay. That's a fact.
2. Spongebob is obsessed with Squidward (a "straight crush" experience). Of course Squidward is against this.
3. But as many people have already stated, Squidward may be gay as well. He's either a closet case or exasperated of Spongebob's antics, more likely the latter.
4. Patrick is just stupid. But as you said, is clear Spongebob uses him as a consolation prize for not having his true love, Squidward.
I mean, at least points 1 and 2 are canon. The rest are just assumptions.
But I actually didn't thought of Sandy being a butch.  The fact we haven't met any wooers, or that she hasn't made a move with the lobster, is enough proof of this.
