Geidi Primes, Halfaxa, and Visions are some of my favorite albums ever. I absolutely love the dark, dreamlike soundscapes that she created for those albums.
Art Angels OTOH was a bit of a disappointment for me. You can tell her production skills have become more polished, but I thought the final product was less interesting than her earlier lo-fi work. I was a little surprised at how critically acclaimed it was. That being said, Grimes is an undeniable musical mega-talent. She's said that the tracks on Geidi Primes are literally some of the first tracks she's ever made, which demonstrates her crazy ear for melody and hooks. And she's had no formal musical training.
Those who are doubting her vocals should check out
this video. She's had a number of questionable live performances from a vocal standpoint, but I think that's more of a result of how involved she is in all aspects of her performances; pre-Art Angels she was essentially a one-woman show. She's not just a studio vocalist, and in the future I'd actually love to hear an album from her that embraces more minimalist production and showcases the uniqueness of her voice.
