It did a bit of both. People got too hung up on the meaning of Black Lives Matter, bringing up stuff like All Lives Matter. That created a lot of division.
But under this hashtag/campaign, a lot of people got encouraged to speak out and contribute to the conversation, so it also helped in a way.
No, it has kept momentum (for lack of a better term) and stayed in the spotlight for more than the typical modern day cause that is heavily promoted for a month or two and then quickly forgotten. It has created discussion not just from millennials, SJW's, the internet community but within the general public and in the news world as well. BLM has shifted world views and shed light on previously ignored issues and to say that it failed when it is still at the height of its life would be a premature judgement or expectation.
The only part of the movement that has fault is when people misunderstand the message or the purpose and begin attacking the character of all whites or attacking the character of all police. Its not the point, you would be doing the movement more favors by not supporting it than you would be by spreading these false messages it does not endorse; see the fourth post in this thread.
No it hasn't failed at all. The goal of bringing police brutality to the forefront of the conversation has succeeded and even prompted resistance (all lives matter, blue lives matter). Politicians are even adding it to their policies. Police departments (not all) are now trying to look at measures that can improve things.
The "racial division" is just people who were never comfortable in the first place and you could argue that Trump brought more of them out as oppose to BLM.
How anyone can call this a failure is beyond me. There isn't going to be a quick and easy solution anyway.
It's not an organization, it's a movement, thus is has neither failed nor succeeded. It has allowed black youth to speak out against racism but has also caused some incendiary behavior. One would expect this of any movement.
In my opinion an extreme sect of the BLM movement is forming. For instance, cheering on the deaths of the innocent cops murdered or saying that cops had this coming. Or just today with JLO, her intentions were obviously in a good place but was insulted and deemed racist. She's probably oblivious to the implications that the phrase ALM has on BLM, but that shouldn't give way to blatant attacks on her character.
It just seems like lthere is a growing part of the BLM movement that's solely working out of anger but not interested in dialogue and finding solutions.

Whether BLM is failure or not comes down to whether the collective rage can be used to change a system that's built to work against PoC. I understand the feeling of being at war but attacking as such is only going to create more division, that imo would make this movement a failure.
If anything, it's brought the true racists to light and ignited a conversation that has been slept on since the Civil Rights Act was passed. Now they need to move pass conversation and focus on making legislation the next step.
