All polls show that as people get wealthier they start to lean more to the right, even when they belong to minorities. For the left to provide more economic opportunities to minorities would be shooting themselves in the foot in electoral terms.

Black people aren't voting for modern democrats because of welfare wtf? Poor, uneducated whites receive the most welfare and vote for republicans who want to take those benefits away. Middle class and up, educated black people who have never relied on welfare also vote for democrats.

It's more like black people don't want to vote for a party that was created by alienating black people and pandering to racist white people.

I'm sorry but it was the Carter administration who created this issue in the first place. Before integration African Americans had a thriving business-owning class because obviously they weren't allowed in white businesses at the time. After integration, instead of promoting these businesses local government basically created these ghettos and then provided welfare to African Americans instead of promoting economic opportunity. Thats what my entire point was. Today the policies are STILL in favor of simple welfare when they should be towards helping African Americans move from the lower to middle class.

These old white liberals are JUST as racist as old white conservatives. Welfare reform has been unanimously opposed by democrats but when Newt Gingrich's reform bill passed in the 90's African American communities benefited immensely as unemployment dropped and wages increased.

Good on the protestors. The police are domestic soldiers who terrorize citizens. Citizens must defend themselves however they see fit from the physical violence and trauma police force on them.

This. I was going to try and explain myself but you did it better.

I must say though that I don't blame anyone who lives on welfare, and I think it's a great thing to have safety nets. However, I do blame the left for using welfare as a political tool to pander to an electorate which they would rather maintain in ghettos and poverty.

Left leaning politicians may have created the welfare state (which has its very set of real issues like you mentioned), but conservatives really helped make it a necessity by criminalizing black people, and in the process reducing their employability for the jobs that were available.

The overarching scheme here is racism factored into the decisions our leaders made that got us to this point. That's what we're fighting. True racism, not the "he called me a ******" ****, no we want to start hacking away at the roots. All the gerrymandering by the left, all the race baiting "War on Drugs" rhetoric by the right, just all of it needs to come down.

I'm hoping this will be the civil rights movement to end them all.
