I prefer when people spell out entire words rather than abbreviations, especially when the abbreviation is only one or two letters off from the completed spelling - it bothers me. I only type in abbreviations when I'm speaking ironically.

Most likely from habit. After writing so many academic papers and everything having to be properly spelled and grammatically correct, it becomes something you do without thinking. I don't mind when other people do it, it's just something I prefer.
