This series has already twisted so much from the original canon. The is literally an alternate timeline.
Vulcan is destroyed, Kirk's father is dead, Kahn was white appeared way earlier than he originally did, Spock and Uhura are dating.
Takei should have a problem with the entire franchise if he truly is concerned about Gene's original vision.
I do agree with his statement about creating more original gay characters though.
