I love this song but let's be honest if people really cared about its idiot and disgusting music video it would've been a hit. Also that Sugar comparison is only a thing on this base. Not even on Sugar music video comments on youtube people talk about it. 0 impact. Backfired. Should've never happened.

I think she moved in 2003, but TOY was written in 2005. Idg why she said somewhere she wrote it when she first moved to LA. Maybe she had the concept for a long time, but she definitely wrote it in 2005.

And tbh, Katy confuses the heck out of me. She will say one thing, tell the story again and contradict herself or change something just enough to make me go "WUT?" =D (which is initially why I started researching so much!!!) I do think it was more like what mathekr said... had the concept, guitar chords, a few lines... but it was written a bit after moving. 2003-2004-ish. I think she'll switch up the stories about the song (but still basic idea) depending on her audience, interview and stuff.
