A police officer should be more willing to lose their own life, than to take another person's. That is their duty as protectors, in the same way that firefighters risk their lives and those in medical professions work tirelessly to save lives, no matter the person's gender, race, religion or sexual orientation, or any other factor - just because this profession allows them to carry guns (in some weird countries) does not give them any right. It's a very serious role and I think people's ideas of it have become very distorted, and thus we find ourselves in a world with cases like this never-ending due to inadequate police officers.
