A 30-year-old polar bear dubbed the world's saddest animal has passed away two years after a global campaign was launched to free him from an Argentinian zoo.
Arturo was the last captive polar bear in Argentina, and died at the Mendoza Zoo in the western side of the country.
A petition two years ago gathered more than a half-million signatures seeking to have the polar bear moved to Canada to a more suitable climate away from the searing 40C South American heat.
The zoo director at the time said Arturo was too old to be safely moved.
The polar bear had been alone in his enclosure since his partner, Pelusa, died of cancer in 2012.
Visitors to the zoo, and animal experts, had reported seeing him pacing nervously in his concrete enclosure, and appearing to struggle with the high temperatures. Arturo only a shallow pool, said to be only 20in deep, to provide cooling water.
The government in Buenos Aires city recently closed the municipal zoo to convert it into an ecological park for various animal species.
