This is something that always puzzles me. The clothes you see on the runways of these fashion shows are so out there, I never see men or women wearing them. Besides that, when I see a guy or a girl that looks great it's usually just classic outfits with some modern touches here and there. In my opinion, those are truly the trends that stick and people actually wear, and look good.
So, what is the point of those runway shows? If it wasn't for desperate celebrities craving for attention on award shows red carpets they'd never sell ****.
Fashion is a business. Haute Couture (the more "outlandish, unwearable" clothing) is a niche section of the business that only has a few thousand consumers. Most of it isn't made in mass. However, celebrities wearing the couture, couture fashion week, it being used in magazines and photoshoots brings publicity and money to the brands.
90% of all runway items are actually ready to wear collections that are completely wearable. You just seem to be ignoring them or looking in the wrong places. High fashion is purposely exclusive, and not marketed to the average consumer to avoid damaging brand identity. That's an unfortunate reason as to why the stereotype still exists.
Well, fashion is an artistic medium and they're expressing their ideas through their designs. It's not made to be worn by the every day folk, so no need to piss yourself there.
There are countless designers in the world with countless designs. Some are aimed more at being wearable for every day things, others (especially the haute couture "runways" often refer to) are simply art forms, or meant for special events.
No, not everything on a runway is suitable for the office, but it doesn't have to be.
There are made-to-wear lines that are mass-produced to be worn casually. Some are still more "out-there" for people, but they're far more practical than what you might've seen on Armani and Chanel runways this last year.
Well tbh a fashion runway is not for normal people who want to just rock the the classics like t-shirts& jeans, lbd, etc. We already know what they look like and fashion would be boring if all shows displayed the basic stuff.
Runway shows are more about pushing boundaries and trying to progress fashion. You might not want to wear the outlandish designs but you'll probably see them in your faves music video or that designer will be commissioned to design your faves next Met Gala dress etc.
Furthermore, these outlandish styles often trickle back into the regular persons wardrobe through influencing other high street designers or by simply being presented by the original designer in a more conservative manner.
