Spotify needs to have several seats. Apple users are more likely to spend money on things. They're paying for 70 million people to access their servers for free. They need to ditch their free tier or pump up ads like they do on terrestrial radio.
You could equally ask, has Apple Music made a profit yet?
Or are they subsidising the cost of Apple Music from iPhone sales and App store profits?
I suspect that both services are focusing on growth rather than profit right now.
Hard to say.
But considering that Apple Music already has, what, 15m paying subscribers, it's probably paid for itself while Spotify continues in the red (20m paid users / 70m free is an unsustainable model for long term growth).
I mean, I do remember that you don't really get spotify premium through apple's store, which violates their ToS or something. and spotify's app is free. apple is getting pretty much no profit from spotify
Our guidelines help competition, not hurt it. The fact that we compete has never influenced how Apple treats Spotify or other successful competitors like Google Play Music, Tidal, Amazon Music, Pandora or the numerous other apps on the App Store that distribute digital music.
