Canada doesn't deserve to be clumped into the states like that, we've earned our distinction. We need some space, now more than ever considering the two frightening prezzie candidates.
Although, deserved-distinction aside, I feel as if it's bad enough that "American" refers only to people living in the US, ignoring the fact that the US isn't even half of NORTH America (totally ignoring the larger half of NA, and all of South America). I wouldn't want to be referred to as American at this point, but I find it pretty typical.
