I stopped talking to a friend last week when she told me she voted Brexit because "she can't stand the foreigners at her job". Most of the foreigners at her work are from outside Europe She's always been pretty dumb so I don't know why I acted surprised.
When you exert all the effort in maintaining the friendship, and the other party doesn't. I have a friend who always wants me to come to where she is, go to where she's near, or meet her where it's convenient for her. She never met me halfway, or exerted the effort to go where I am. I made the decision to stop being friends with her because it's tiring to be friends with someone who doesn't actually care for you in the bigger picture!
I once followed a very close friendship of 2 guys. They were really good friends, roommates, bedmates, fwb. But sadly it had to end because I think the other one fell in love with the other and the other one don't feel the same. he went away and just said that he just want to find himself but he never showed up on social media again. it's really sad now that i think of it since they don't talk anymore and I can't watch old videos of them without breaking my heart (lol). It's actually sadder to see broken friendships between men since the bond is stronger, I guess.
I think that most friendships end because it isn't convenient for one or both parties anymore. One friend may legitimately value the bond that they have created, whilst the other person values the proximity. If one friends believes that there is a true connection, and one believes that there is a lucky coincidence, friendships deteriorate. For example, work friends. You would most likely have never spoken to these people in your life, but it is convenient to become friends. If one person holds the belief that sincere friendships can be made, but another believes that it is in their best interest to maintain a friendship whilst at work, and at work only, differing beliefs cause pain and anguish in one party, and nothing in the other.
Often people change leading them to drift apart. When going down different paths of life sometimes they just done cross anymore. Of course there's always relationships which end friendships as people tend to forget about their friends but RUN back as soon as there's trouble in paradise.
I ended my friendship with three of my best friends in college (basically cut myself off of the whole group) because one of them got a sketchy stoner boyfriend and they started hanging out with his equally sketchy stoner friends and the whole group turned into something I just didn't see myself in. Then they went to my birthday party and were super rude to my whole friends and it was just the last drop. I feel much better without them. People change and it's sad that I don't talk to people I used to love so much but:
For me, it had to do with a friend's focus being shifted entirely on their significant other, and only contacting me whenever they would need something, not even to ask how I am or what I'm up to these days. It hasn't always been like this, but we both changed a lot through the years and maybe now is the time to realize we'd make better use of our times if we went our separate ways.
