The Roman Republic was much more interesting than the actual Empire, and its imagery is much more recognizable so I go with that.

Ancient India (though not an empire but a civilization) and its culture is for me the most mysterious and fascinating. of all. They started/discovered/invented many things in every field imagineable which other civilizations copied later on.
