Days after a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage flopped the Senate approved a bill 25-14 to allow a person to adopt their partner's child and the other chamber approved it this May by 113-64!
Why are they so behind?
I thought they would be more progressive than that.
The public is liberal, but the government there is conservative-leaning and bills like these tend to take AGES to go through. It took like 2 years for this to get out of the Senate stage
There's also a risk it could be forced to a referendum if naysayers gather enough signatures Let's hope they don't
that's a good first step but like you said it's only to adopt your partner's child (mostly lesbians that had a child if they were with a man before).
this still means two man or two women can't adopt a "strangers" child on their own
Yeah Hopefully marriage isn't too far away. Belgium did marriage first then adoption; once they could get married there was no argument left against full adoption
Okay, the plan is set out now: If opponents gather 50,000 signatures in 100 days this goes to a referendum in early 2017. They have until October 6th to collect them. If they don't then the law goes into effect.
Please don't let this go to a public vote even if polls say the majority is okay with it, it's still too risky
