The Rock HIMSELF is playing the character, a half Samoan man, and he had no issue with the multiple reworkings of the character throughout the voice recording process. They have redesigned Moana as well. I'm sure if he was "offended" by the look of the character, he would have made it known, and they would have no problem tweaking things.
No one at Disney wants to disrespect anyone. That's one of the reasons they are making this movie, to have everyone start feeling represented, and what happens? They find some way to complain about nothing, literally. And not to be mean, but there were a few guys I went to high school with who look just like this guy. He's just an exaggerated Disney version.
Here's details of the actual character. Everyone presenting, including The Rock, seemed proud of what they created.

He fits the film and it's art direction. It's an animated film, and they want him to be loveable to kids so merchandise will fly off shelves. I haven't met any Polynesian girl that looks exactly like Moana either. She has exaggerated features as well.

Obviously, but its just the fact that it is understandable that someone doesn't want their culture exaggerated just for someone else to make a profit. I mean its not like the people themselves are going to even see a dime of the money so whats wrong with them making it known "hey this isn't right."

It's too late to complain. If they really want to make a statement, don't go watch the film. Let it be a box office bomb, or let it break even. Although Disney will say they had the approval of many Polynesian people, including superstar The Rock who voices the character, at the end of the day. You can't please everybody.

They don't have enough of a voice to make it bomb. Their sales alone won't impact it much. Add in the fact you have people like me who are still going to see it regardless, then what can they do other than make their voice known the way they did. Which if you can tell from the reply of this forum are still going to be ignored.

Hercules in all respects is depicted as more bulky than their guy, but her comes out looking like a greek God. most of the statutes of this Maui God have him actually looking skinny as hell to the point you want to say "Do you even lift bro." But then he becomes Bulky to fit the stereotype. Thats the whole issue I think. If it were Black people, Asian people, or Latino heritage it would have been called out. But its not any of the main three minorities so of course people won't care.
Its not like disney couldn't get it right. It is the fact they purposefully got it wrong. But like stated in this thread. "No 1 curs."

Well, cry a river then. People are always finding something to be offended about. If Dwayne wanted his character to look like him or if he felt it was offensive to his people, he would have surely said something and they would have surely made changes. People can't always get what they want. Being upset because the character is fat is just freaking ridiculous. If anything, it's fat shaming at its finest. As if the character being big takes away from any of the good qualities he has.
There are plenty of Polynesians who possess the same shape and look depicted. What is all this "he's a fat pig" complaining saying to them?

You know they find it offensive, and you are on here arguing with me, yet you are still going to see it? Stop. And of course, it going to be ignored. The film is already made.

I don't know. It's not like Moana herself is fat and they seem to have done their research on Polynesian culture and even got actors from the Pacific Islands/or Pacific Islander ancestry to play the characters.
Sometimes, a character is just husky. It's not indicative of anything.
I'm not a Pacific Islander so I don't get to judge.

My whole argument was that they have a right to find something that over exaggerates their character offensive and they weren't wrong for pointing it out. Which does create an issue for them and doesn't make it a non-issue as you said. Other than that I thought your points were very valid. Why do you think I wasn't just completely coming at you saying you were wrong. I believe your point is a good one. I'm just saying that we shouldn't ignore their point even if we disagree with it. That's all.

this is so ****ing messy... that is not a fact.
there is no single pacific islander body type, we aren't all just hawaii or samoa- we range from light to dark and from thin to heavy.
stop generalizing cultures that you don't know **** about, thank you!

He doesn't really look obese, just wide and strong tbh. Regardless Disney should aim to be as accurate as possible with their representations otherwise it's just lazy.

I say it's a non-issue because it's an animated film and no real life human being looks like a cartoon due to the fact that every animated character is exaggerated in some way. So finding it offensive when there are plenty of Polynesians who have a somewhat similar look as him, is a non-issue in my eyes.
They have a right to say something and not be ignored though.

Well she knows better , it's her culture, they could have at least respected his figure, if they wanted an funny "fat" guy they should have added it. Now it's too late. I think she's right but I'm still going to watch the movie
