This is it, the song that launched our beloved Kelis.

Released in 1999 in America and 2000 over here, this remains one of her signature tracks. Top 5 in the UK and Top... 60 in the US (but it did go T10 on the R&B charts!) and decently charting all over the world. It's stood the test of time as one of her most enduring songs, mainly that shouting chorus. One of her most iconic moments.

But the chorus is just one part of the song, the production is impeccable and the verses are so good too. Kelis adds her own little snarky ad libs over the track too, really introducing you to her in full force. One of the most signature and representative debuts ever. The video also is particularly amazing. This is really a perfect way to introduce an artist, new and exciting song, stands out from the crowd and shows off who this artist is and paired with an equally amazing video.

Like she says on bossy: I'm the first girl to scream on a track.

Doogle speaks the truth, "This song is iconic in its own right, I still love it", and Latinazza is disappointed, "To this day I can't believe how low it peaked on the US charts. It was huge in its heyday." This was released when R&B charts mattered so Top 10 there is a pretty cool thing. Diarrhoea sums it up again, "What a good breakout single immaculately written, produced, and even sung/screamed. The second pre-chorus is literally perfect. "

As a debut album, you really don't get a second chance to make your introduction so it has to be good. Granted, the intro for this album was in last place, but the rest is pretty fantastic. Once you get over those two duds there the album is a real look into the person called Kelis.

Kaleidoscope is a surprisingly adept album for a first try, but then she had the Neptunes to guide her. She came in with this full persona already, her attitude and her unusual songs and her unique style. She was a fully formed artist right from the start. It's rough around the edges and raw in places, but it's a nice roughness that is only to be expected from a first timer. This is the album that gave us Kelis and everything that would follow and what a stellar album it is.

I could virtually name every track as a highlight, but special mention to the iconic shouting on Caught Out There, the vaudevillian Get Along With You, the interludes of Game Show, the soaring bop that is Roller Rink and the fluttering sweetness of In The Morning. Right from the start Kelis was already conquering all types and kinds of songs, not about to be boxed in as the shouty girl. This album may be left in the dust to some as her career went on, but I think given all she's accomplished since then it's even nicer to return to it now and see her beginnings. Some artists go through 50 year careers and never release albums as good as this. Kelis did it her first try.
