Hi guys. I'm a little stressed out. I'm a nursing major with a passion for PR. Everyone in my family is in the healthcare industry and it was so expected of me that I flung myself into it in college. I found out I can switch majors seamlessly today, but I'm so worried about finding a job..and internships? It's such a vast world and all my connections are in the medical industry. My question is for anyone in PR/who knows about it...is it possible to break into the field without an already established connection? Do stable jobs and incomes exist? I still have to tell my parents which will be the hardest thing ever and they won't take it well. Idk I just found a passion in it, and unfortunately, not medicine. Also to anyone in PR or media....do you like it? Thanks

You should consider merging your passion for PR with your experience in the healthcare industry. Use those connections you have.

This. I've crafted a background in healthcare communications because I love both fields. The key to succeeding in this field is internships. To get a stable and secure job, you need 2-3 internships with about a year to two of experience from them. Once you get your foot in the door, you'll have access to more options.

I'm in this field. It is absolutely possible to break in without any connections. Focus on school, and try to get a masters in comms as soon as you finish undergrad. Also try your VERY hardest to get internships during undergrad and/or grad school.

Definitely do PR if you're interested! It's a really exciting field that's for sure. I agree with all the other posts, the key to success is internships.

The healthcare PR field is growing really fast and there is definitely a need for people who can write and communicate well as well as have some knowledge about things in the medical field. There are a lot of PR agencies that focus just on healthcare communications, and there are also hospitals that employ PR people. You might just be able to use your medical connections to get your first PR internship or job.

I am also going into the communications filed, though I'm not necessarily sure if I want to do PR. I had a PR internship last year and I loved it but there are other things in the communications field I'm also interested in. Feel free to PM me if you wanna talk more about it

I studied and got my bachelors in advertising and public relations. It is a great and stable field to get into. Communication skills will always be needed.

The way to succeed in public relations is to get a good education in the field, make connections by attending networking sessions, and landing internships. Internships are super important because you learn things in them that can't be taught in a classroom.

I don't know if you live in the United States but if you do, check out the Public Relations Society of America. You can find a lot of information there, including internships, jobs, and networking events in your area.

Also, if you do go into this field make sure to clean up your social media and get on LinkedIn. This field is all about the image and personal brand you convey.

The beautiful thing about public relations and communications is that they can be merged in almost any of kind of field. You can do PR in healthcare, technology, sciences, music, film, government, television, public health, education, etc.

DON'T SWITCH

Staying in any field related to medicine is the smartest thing because the world is literally going down and you chances of landing a job are much easier. PR is a great major (It's mine) but I feel it's weaker in comparison.


However, if you do the switch, use ur time wisely especially when it comes to your projects. Creativity should exist in your uni portfolio.

Stick to healthcare. It's a more secure career path and has a much higher starting salary than PR jobs.

I'm in Marketing and PR and I'm still thinking of new ways to advance in my career. It's enjoyable, but I don't think it pays that well.

thanks for all the advice guys...if you dont mind me bringing up salary. i would never do something for the money, however i am on the fast track to getting my masters and becoming a nurse practitioner. i feel like the salary difference will be the hardest part of my parents to accept...is the difference really that bad? (especially in an urban area like manhattan/LA?)

Yes, you will need several years of experience to even get close to the starting salary of a nurse practitioner.
