I never really stopped to question it.

Why do we wave rainbow flags and label it "gay"? Why is it our symbol? I mean looking at the rainbow, it can come off a little gay But I don't really consider it as a trademark to who I am. Honestly, it's the opposite.

What's the origin of it?

The multiple colors symbolize the diversity within the community and the rainbow in general is a symbol of happiness and peace (rainbow after the rain -> serenity after years of struggles). At least that's what I think

Gilbert Baker (the man who designed it) was said to be inspired by Judy Garland's Somewhere Over The Rainbow, and/or the hippie movement with their 60's "Flag of All Races"

I always find it a kii that sexuality and art(pop) were the two removed when the flag went into mass production

In Victorian England, green was used to label homosexuality, as well as Hitler with pink and black, lesbians associated themselves with purple, and also black for asexual.

It was during the times of reclaiming those colours that defined us that the rainbow flag (which had existed previously in various forms) then formed the Pride Flag we know of today.

Its history not only involves Judy Garland, but in remembrance of Harvey Milk who sacrificed his life for what he believed in and was one of many who fought for our rights - during our darkest times when LGBT were slaughtered in the streets and restricted of equality rights.

Each colour together depicts diversity, movement, our history, peace, love, the continued defiance, and celebration of our community today.

Because Mariah freed the homosexuals when she released Rainbow

Because gays want to destroy all things religious since the bible outlines the significance of the rainbow
