Her latest album 'Anti' seemed to shun traditional chart-dominating hits in favour of something altogether more eclectic, offering fans a mixture of dancehall-influenced R&B, mid-tempo doo-wap ballads, and even a Tame Impala cover doused in psychedelia.
It's no surprise, then, that Rihanna's concert at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday night - which follows pulsating gigs at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, and Wembley Stadium on the UK leg of the Anti World Tour - isn't your normal pop show.
With a minimal stage set-up which shuns the frills of the modern pop climate, Ri-Ri is understated and classy from the outset, offering fans a glimpse of her true vocal range, from the lovelorn refrain of opener 'Stay' to the regretful lyrics of 'Love the Way You Lie'.
The whole concert is peppered with a refreshing conservatism, lifting the veil behind the enigmatic pop star's persona as she allows her adoring fan base a closer look at what makes her tick.
There's plenty of Anti-related hits for fans to soak up, but it's the classic singles which really set the night on fire.
You can barely hear the performer, born Robyn Fenty, when she airs her classic 2003 single 'Umbrella'.
A stadium-sized anthem of epic proportions, the track doesn't so much lift the atmosphere as it does shove it into a cannon and fire it off into the stratosphere.
And on a summer's night in Coventry, with thousands turned out to prove the four-year gap between her Unapologetic and Anti albums has done nothing to curb their adoration of their idol, you get the feeling Rihanna quite enjoys having her back against the wall.

Personally, I would rather hear her singing while just standing there rather than listening to some prerecorded vocals playing while she's dancing. After all, we are going to see a singer so singing should be the prime aspect. If she can pull both then that's great, but yeah, like I said earlier.
And I guess she can do what Katy Perry did and add immense props and spectacular visuals but I guess that wouldn't fit the whole "anti" theme. I mean, if you look at the outfits and how simple the stage is you'll realize what I'm talking about. The simplicity of it all gives the show a raw and naked feeling. Free from gimmicks. Although, I do feel like if she wanted to do that she should've went with arenas instead of stadiums. But whatever I guess. It's all up to her.

I understand that she wants to fit in the Anti theme and looks like an alternative act on a festival.
Katy's PWT convinced that everybody needs a video wall, even Halsey has a video wall behind her.
However when I asked people about seeing Rihanna live. She has a negative reputation of being late, having overly aggressive security trying to keep people in the seats by threatening that she won't come on stage and when she comes on stage, she strolls around like she doesn't give a ****, lack of effort. It's a wonder that people want to see her live, when those who has seen her live said "never again".
I bought a festival ticket to see Halsey and can see Rihanna too. I hope she can turn around the bad rep she built up.

Old tea. This tour has really upped her reputation. She's on time, and people praise how she makes the audience feel and the inclusiveness of the show. It's visually appealing to fit the music. One thing i love about the reviews this tour is they focus on how it sounds, her energy toward the audience and how the audience responds to it. Which is why it's getting such acclaim. People who said "never again" are probably people who moan about there not being enough lights and videos to feed the feeble minds they have.
Katy and Haley probably need more visual stimulation behind them.

GUYS. FRIGGIN BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE. I WAS BARRIER. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW I GOT TO BARRIER BUT RIH LOOKED AT MY FRIEND (FROM IN REAL LIFE) AND MY FRIEND FROM TWITTER WHO WE MET UP WITH, AND SHE KEPT LOOKING AT ME I SWEAR.
I HAD EYE CONTACT DURING BBHMM, KIB AND RUDE BOY.
I WAS ON THE BIG SCREEN FOR LYL, UMBRELLA, DIAMONDS AND PROBABLY OTHERS.
NO-ONE CAN JUDGE THIS TOUR UNTIL YOU GO.
"THE SHOW IS TOO SHORT?" NO, IT IS NOT. IT FITS ALL TOGETHER SO WELL, SHE WAS ON FOR 1HR30MINS.
"THE STAGE IS TOO SIMPLE!" THAT MAKES IT SO SIMPLE ANS AESTHETICALLY PLEASING AND ALL EYES ARE ON RIH.
THE ENTRANCE IS THE BEST THING EVER, HER VOCALS WERE PHENOMENAL, MY FRIEND WHO WENT TO WEMBLEY SAID COVENTRY WAS BETTER
I CAN'T EVEN PICK MY FAVOURITE PERFORMANCE, BUT STAY, SEX WITH ME, BBHMM, LOVE ON THE BRAIN AND WFL/HDIYL WERE DEF AMONGST MY FAVES. THE BEST TOUR I HAVE EVER BEEN TOO, THANK YOU RIHANNA FOR PLEASING US WITH ANTI.
1000000/10, SO MUCH BETTER THAN DWT (and I've been to that show also)
You really can't comment on the show until you go. Well done Rih You never fail to disappoint me.

I'm attending the show in Vienna and I'm searching for a GC ticket. Does anybody have one or does anybody know someone who sells one GC ticket?

Another review of Dublin
The observer 4/5 stars:
Quote:
This isn’t how Rihanna normally rolls. Granted, Rihanna’s eighth studio album, Anti, was meant to be different, a departure from the chart-seeking the Barbadian has been on since Umbrella, her first hit just shy of a decade ago. A grab bag of styles with few conventional hits on it, Anti has been wildly successful nonetheless; it was certified double platinum in May, the first US LP to do so this year.
And this Anti tour breaks moulds: all-white staging, maximally minimal, in stark contrast to arena convention. Another strange costume – for this year’s islands-tinged mega-hit, Work – suggests a Wookie dipped in glitter. Ill-defined inflatables grow tumescent, like blobby onstage îles flottantes. A transparent gangplank, floating in mid-air on its way from the B stage to the main stage, rocks alarmingly when Rihanna simulates sex on it for Sex With Me, a song as single-entendre as any by AC/DC.
Tonight, Rihanna pulls off several minutes of psychedelic brooding, while the TV screens render the star – now wearing giant specs – in wibbly fuchsia. The crowd doesn’t just tolerate it – it actively wigs out.
What starts as an emotionally memorable gig soon settles into merely an aesthetically remarkable one. It is a shame that the electrifying simpatico of Love the Way You Lie (Part 2) isn’t sustained throughout. But for Love on the Brain – one of those rare tracks that Rihanna sings like singers are meant to sing – she reprises her recent, celebrated Billboard Awards performance. Rihanna’s inscrutability is once again transformed by jazz hands, and some scrunched-up jazz cheeks and jazz eyes.

I went to both Wembley and Coventry and had the best time ever! Being in her presence is like nothing else in this world! I got pretty central and front views in both nights and shouted my lungs out, I am still recovering from 2 straight days of queuing, standing and screaming for hours but it was so worth it!
My only complaint is that there wasn't really much chance for direct interaction with her like on her previous tours, I wish she had a catwalk or something to get closer to the crowd cause we at the front were going crazy for her, we deserved a chance to get closer after queuing for so long.

I see you trying to defend you fave. I didn't posted it as harm, just stating the prevalent negative opinions in Western Europe.
It might be old, it's also 10 years of spreading that negative reputation before she started trying to turn it around.
I hope she can convince me at the festival I'm going to attend.

The first 12 songs are such a bore now and even though it get's better after Man Down the fact that she still mixing WFL with HDIYL and in less than 2 minutes demolishes my excitment. The tour grew on me and I'm still hating. Needed Me and SOM don't work live. Diamonds, LOTB and KIB are the only songs I'm here for and she's ****ing them up big time...
I'm excited cause I'm about to see her for the first time, but I'm also really mad at all of this, it's really conflicting.

To be fair TMT was the first and only time except Valor Rihanna has raised the key while performing Diamonds which makes it vocally more challenging and better imo.
From observing her Rihanna performs differently in the US vs WW. Take her performing What Now in the US vs other shows WW. The US is more fickle and critical of singers so Rihanna really puts more effort in her US shows it's just the truth. I think she's taken her Worldwide fans for granted (hence neglecting them with promo in recent years and even tour dates) while always catering to the US. I can only hope she'll begin to make more effort for EVERY show and not perform based on how she's feeling when on stage
