This thread is kinda sequel to the Orlando shooting incident. After the incident happened, gay people wanted to give blood, but couldn't and apparently started screaming "bigotry" and even in the thread about it created on here, people immediately started playing the victim too.

Based on this, here's a post that everyone should read that explains very well why the ban is in place and why it makes sense regardless of hurt feelings of gay people and screams of "bigotre!!"

Basically gay men would account for like a 5% increase in blood donations, but msm also account for 50% of new HIV cases, more than any other group, so it makes sense to exclude a low contributing but very high risk group.

Anyways read. The gay community should work on bringing HIV rates down, before we move on to donations.

I agree. I never understood why gay people are upset about the ban when HIV sometimes takes a while to show up and like 20 percent of us have it. Gays want straight people to work together to lift the ban, but instead, gay people need to work together to stop HIV rates.

That's very unfortunate! It's because of those who are barebacking on Truvada, and some who think the disease doesn't exist.

There are so many threads on this debate. I'm writing my dissertation on the stigma behind LGBT+ members whom are HIV+ so i'm researching into this subject too.

Blood gets tested, no matter who it belongs to, for all diseases. By denying gay men whom have had anal sex the right to give blood it is discrimination. Women whom have had anal can donate blood, just gay men cannot. The straight community has a higher % of HIV than the gay community but stigma and attitudes towards the LGBT+ circle clouds societies mind and judgement.

It won't be too long until gay men can donate, Ireland are on the way to allowing it now (There's research/practice in progress).

The ban is still ridiculous as is; it precludes all monogamous MSM and all gay men who don't participate in anal intercourse, and twelve months since the last sexual encounter before being eligible to donate again is absurdly long.

well they test the blood anyway before giving them to the hospital so i don't rly see why they wouldn't want blood from gays. in the 80ies it may have made some sense but now?

Clearly didn't read the linked reddit post. Blood I tested in batches not individually, meaning if one batch is infected, then all the blood in that batch is unusable. It makes no sense to risk it. And how doesn't it make sense now, when HIV rates among gays actually rose last year?

What is the percentage of women who have anal sex compared to the total female population? That's the point, gay men (2% of the population) are just not worth the risk compared to banning women

well in my country (switzerland) it is tested individually =) they also message you if they find smth odd about your blood eg hepatitis or hiv.
