If the UK decides to leave the EU (unlikely) should they utilize their potential economic power in their Commonwealth realm and perhaps seek closer ties with other Anglo countries (Can, Aus, NZ, US)? Those countries are already extremely close, have great relations, strong trade deals, and powerful economically with an largely educated majority citizens. They also are similar culturally.
I also think more attention needs to be paid to the economic systems in each country, and the neo-liberal policies, rather than thinking deals with other countries will solve the problems. Manufacturing is not going to come back, you need to find another way to find jobs for all those people rather than just thinking we can make stuff to trade.
The Commonwealth is an anachronism. Canada and Australia are more likely to get rid of the Queen than they are to embrace any sort of Commonwealth integration. They are forward-looking, independent nations… why would they want to bind themselves to Britain again?
Moreover it is logistically impossible for Britain to trade with the Commonwealth (especially Australia) as much as it does with Europe. This is because every nation's largest trading partner is always it's closest neighbour (USA and Canada, UK and Europe, etc.)
Europe will always be of much more economic significance to the UK than the scattered Commonwealth. This idea is a fantasy.
Compared to the US, yes we are Gay marriage is not the only measure of progressiveness, & the only reason that hasn't happened yet is because of our ridiculous politicians that don't get anything done. The majority of Australians have been in support of it for years now, support is up in the 70s.
