NOW: U.S. House gun control Sit-In
Quote:
WASHINGTON — Democratic lawmakers launched an extraordinary protest Wednesday, staging a sit-in on the House floor, bringing legislative business to a halt to highlight their demand for a vote on gun control legislation. But Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said the dramatic protest was simply a "publicity stunt."
Scores of House lawmakers took to the House floor before noon and refused to let Republicans resume regular business until the House votes on gun control. They took turns for hours talking about gun violence, ticking off mass shootings in Newtown, Conn., Charleston, S.C., San Bernardino, Calif., and Orlando, Fla., where Omar Mateen slaughtered 49 people and injured 53 others June 12.
“What is the tipping point? Are we blind? Can we see? How many more mothers, how many more fathers need to shed tears of grief before we do something?" exclaimed Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., who kicked off the sit-in. "We have been too quiet for too long. There comes a time when you have to say something, when you have to make a little noise, when you have to move your feet. This is the time. Now is the time to get in the way. The time to act is now. We will be silent no more."
Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, attempted to gavel the House into order at noon, but when the Democrats refused to quiet, he gaveled the House into recess instead.
"Our people deserve to know where their representatives stand on this issue, just as they now do with their senators," Hoyer said. "Led by civil rights hero Rep. John Lewis, we will be sitting-in until the House is allowed an opportunity to vote. This is an issue that ought to transcend party — it's about saving lives and keeping our communities safe."
More than six hours after the sit-in began, Ryan said on CNN he would not schedule a vote on bills that have already been defeated in the Senate. "This is a publicity stunt," Ryan said. "This isn't trying to come up with a solution to a problem. This is trying to get attention."
Senators on Monday voted down four partisan gun measures and were trying to craft a compromise Wednesday that would make it harder for people on terrorist watch lists to get guns.
Most of the House demonstration, unlike last week's filibuster in the Senate that led to the votes Monday, was not broadcast on C-SPAN. The network carries feeds from cameras belonging to the House, which are controlled by the majority party and turned off when the House is not in session. Instead, C-SPAN aired video feeds being posted by Democrats from the floor via their social media accounts.
“The fact is they can cut off the mics, they can cut off the cameras, they will not silence our voice,” he said as the sit-in approached four hours.

The Republican majority shut down C-SPAN's cameras but people are live streaming inside.
They're currently on their seventh hour. Democrats better slay!

He's right. Nothing will come of this since the GOP has a massive majority in the House. Dems know that

They cut the cameras, yet 90% of the country agree with the Democrats.
Why are these people so gullible?

This is amazing to witness (via social media nonetheless, but still..)
This is historic, and I'm surprised at the lack of interest in this activism.
Gun crimes most affect young people, black people, and as of recent, LGBT.
Isn't that the demographic of this forum? I hope y'all supporting the thousands at the House right now.
It's people like those sitting on the floor now that have changed the world we live in. War veterans, social campaigners from various minority groups that have sacrificed and spent most of their lives offering theirs for us.. the future.. and beyond, the children that haven't been born yet. It shall not be long before it is our turn and the older men and women fighting for our protection are no longer alive to do so. When their time is up, it'll be ours indefinitely. However, together we're stronger. Our time is now. You can actually join in, pick up a phone, care more than ever and not just post-terrorism when it's convenient to send a tweet, post a thread or wipe the tears from your eyes when yet another mass shooting takes place or a unarmed, innocent young black person becomes yet another victim of these crimes. We can't change everything in one day, but today we can restrict people with criminal history from owning a gun.
Truly amazed by the defiance of these men and women right now. They're so dedicated

It's gaining traction and media coverage in the states like no other, probably more than the Senators, you just aren't seeing it on ATRL because people don't seem to care on this website. It's all over my social media and the other forums I visit. It's great to see Democrat sticking it and finally making a call for action. It's been damn far too long.

John Garamendi absolutely destroyed the Republicans sitting there and refusing to defend their votes. What a speech
