It mostly has to do with the fact that their original stuff was flopping so they did sequels knowing it'd be easy money. And also they go through mnay scripts trying to at least make it good.

But Inside Out was pretty successful

CGI is time-consuming and most animated Pixar films cost at least $180 million.

Because they're one of the few that actually takes the time to put out original work of high quality. Except for cars idk wtf they're smoking with that mess.

It takes hundreds of thousands of man hours to create an animated film. And it's around 3-5 years of pre-production and production before you even see the finished product. Even now, the announcement of The Incredibles 2 is done knowing that it'll take at least the next 4-5 years to complete before it's released.

Cars is one of their only low points but who cares about that when they have the masterpiece that is WALL-E?

If pixar has a huge hit movie and they wait a decade or more to release the sequel, they can get multigenerational appeal and make more money. There are loads of college students going to see Finding Dory because the saw Finding Nemo as a kid. In addition, the next generation of kids are also watching finding Dory.
