Probably. Sociopaths tend to start killing smaller creatures first before moving on to humans. However, it all depends on whether or not they've been raised in families where this is considered 'normal' or if they started doing it on their own. If latter is the case then yes, I think those people have sociopath tendencies and should be monitored closely.
I just don't know how any sane person could kill an animal and have absolutely no empathy for doing so. It's one thing if you or someone else's life is in danger but for "fun"?
No? Deer hunting is huge where I live because of the overpopulation of deer. It's something that all of the men on my dads side of the family does and has always done because it puts meat on the table and helps reduce the crazy deer population. Nobody in my family is mentally ill because of it and it's rude to imply that someone is off in the head because they participate in a sport.

Erm. The OP was talking about trophy hunting aka for fun/sport. Not for balancing out the species' population.
