It really comes down to how you look at it, in my opinion. She also plays a protagonist in Quantico, so viewers who know her from the show will know that she's versatile after they watch her play a villain. This is also true for casting directors. Sure, the West might not be ready for a brown female lead, but she seems to be well-liked and knows how to network, so I would say there is a chance for her to play the supporting protagonist. She is also widely regarded for her beauty, so she's palatable to Western viewers too.
No matter what, I'm rooting for her! I watched her interview with Kelly Ripa - the one where she talks about her shooting schedule - and she works incredibly hard.
