With all the mass shootings and hostage situations since the weekend, what should be done to prevent these things from happening in the future?

Edit: Assume that mental healthcare will be improved in all situations but "nothing"

In the late 1700s, a "gun" was a pistol that weren't made by the millions nor thousands, not an automatic assault rifle that anyone could get their hands on. Abolish ha.

edit: you should be able to have a gun, but you shouldn't be free do buy it on a whim, or because its cool. its a protective tool, not a toy. serious background checks + safety classes should be required.

i don't agree with abolishing the 2nd amendment, but I think the requirements to get a gun license should be much higher. for ****'s sake, I had to prepare for months to take my driver's test, and a car isn't designed just to kill. people looking to buy guns should have to jump through legal and administrative hoops to get a license, and then submitted for some time of evaluation before being given a gun. People who order massive amounts of ammunition should get a psych eval and/or scrutinized for why they need so much ammo.

This. They should update some parts of the Constitution to get along with the times.

But, you literally never need a gun for anything ever. Hunting? Don't need to, go to walmart. Self-defense? Statistically rare. Hobbies? Get another one.

Let's take the guns away forever. Simple as that.

There are people in rural areas who need guns to defend themselves and defend livestock from coyotes, pests, etc.

Background checks, first. But we should just put them away tbh, UK style.

Get a tranquilizer gun.

The 2nd amendment needs to be amended but not abolished. Establish provisions to allow for bans of things more powerful than a simple handgun. However, also make sure hunting rifles can't be banned. Maybe instead of people owning them they could be rented at parks instead.
