well i dont think he's dating you because youre japanese. Most people who date others for their race wants that person to look like their race but since you dont look japanese, that probably isnt the case. I had a guy in korea who jumped for joy when my friend told him i was half african but then when he saw me, he was disappointed because i was "too pale" and "didnt look like the other africans he's been with" but i digress.
i think he truly wants to date you. getting over the otaku speed bump is the only obstacle i see. The guy i dated wasnt into anything except japanese culture so hopefully the guy youre seeing has other interests in addition to anime
It's just that I heard a lot of white guy rice queens only like you for your race and then dump you easily for another Asian vying for his attention.
