This is just illogical. They test for HIV, and straight people get HIV as well.
And they have a rule that you can donate if you're gay and celibate for 12 months or straight. There is no concrete evidence that can check to know if you're lying about both. It's a stupid homophobic law.
Even though I can't donate blood because of my status, OneBlood is kinda shady. They claim they're non profit but apparently how much they sell blood per pint to hospitals is "confidential" and the CEO pension and pay is suspicious.
TBH if I had a choice between dying and getting blood from a donor who is HIV+ or undetectable I'd choose the blood. Since HIV/AIDS is no longer a death sentence, I'd be able to live a full life.
Obviously, negative blood should be used first, but in dire situations maybe we should consider allowing donations from all gay potential donors.
I believe gay people can't even donate organs, which is even worse as it could mean life or death even in an everyday situation.
I've always thought the testing for HIV was a myth. I know they test for certain diseases. But if they tested for HIV, why would their be a ban in the first place?
it was heartbreaking to think there was family and friends of the victims that couldn't donate because of this stupid ban.
I mean they only ask you the question are you gay? and if you say no, you can donate
