One might argue that her bleaching is her way of battling those issues.

I'm not going to say whether someone should bleach their skin or not, but I just think it's sad how people judge black people for trying to get lighter, while applauding and encouraging white people who get tans. Yes, one form is more harmful than the other, but they are both cases of people not being happy with their physical appearance and actually taking action to change it. Whether we on the outside agree with the reasons why is irrelevant as long as they aren't hurting anyone.
If we're going to blame someone for this, we should blame our society for being so eurocentric as to make black people feel less than because they aren't light-skinned. Let's stop blaming these young black men and women for being a product of their society. Yes, it's more empowering to be happy and confident in the skin you are in, but if someone isn't, it's not our place to pass judgement on them for it.
