In Australia, there was a massacre at Port Arthur where 35 were killed. After that, then Prime Minister, John Howard, did one of the best things a Prime Minister has ever done and introduced strict gun control laws. There was a ban on all semi-automatic and some types of shotguns, and there was a stringent licensing system. The Government increased the cost of healthcare so it could raise money to buy guns off people, which lead to them destroying over 1 million guns. Morons that could not see the benefit in this attempted to have themselves elected to the Liberal Party to try and sway votes against the reform, but the National Firearms Agreement passed. After that, the rate of homicide decreased to less than 1 out of every 100,000 people, and eventually dropped to below 1 out of 670,000. There are generally 30 - 40 deaths by firearms each year in Australia, which can happen in 1 day in America. Of course, there have still been shootings since but that was such a turning point in Australia's history.
It just sucks that there are so many preventable deaths in America per day. So much could be done but the Government is just watching people die. Why can I go into a supermarket and buy a gun? Guns are designed to kill. They are designed to end lives. I know it is harder to change laws over there, especially since gun rights are entrenched in the Constitution, but surely more than enough people can see that this cannot continue.
I feel terrible that America is becoming synonymous with violence and unnecessary death, but you can hardly blame people when all they hear on the news is "There was a shooting at School XY" and "X amount of people were killed when a man with a gun..."
I really, really, REALLY hope that the two Orlando incidents are catalysts for change, because it is definitely needed. I have more to say, but this saddens me too much.
TL;DR: Australia has great gun control laws and America needs to catch up with the developed world.
