Here I've always thought that oriental was just a way of saying someone was Asian but from like Japan/Korea, and, and people here use that as a descriptive term without anyone getting offended... ?

i saw a discussion about this, actually. in america it used to be used to refer to asians in a racist way and is associated with past treatment of them, while in britain it doesn't have that history, so it's offensive here and not really there. that's how it is with some other words we consider offensive, too, actually.
